BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH



                                 Leslie Garry Adams, Professor


Dr. L. Garry Adams earned the Associate of Science degree from Tarleton State University, and Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Pathology degrees from Texas A&M University. He completed a four-year residency in Veterinary Pathology and became board certified as a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. He began his career with the International Programs division of Texas A&M University. He worked for seven years with the Rockefeller Foundation, USAID and other organizations on four continents and in over 15 countries where he developed and led programs in research on infectious diseases of domestic animals and established international program linkage projects. He returned to the Department of Veterinary Pathology at Texas A&M University where he taught in the professional veterinary curriculum, graduate program and continued his research to become tenured as an Associate Professor and then full Professor. For almost two decades, he has been involved actively in improving the scientific basis of the two largest animal health regulatory programs in the USA, brucellosis and tuberculosis. Recently, he has very active in developing and implementing biodefense and emerging diseases research initiatives.

Dr. Adams’ research areas include studies of the genetic basis of natural disease resistance, molecular pathogenesis of intracellular bacterial pathogens, and the development of vaccines and diagnostic tests against zoonotic diseases. He has authored more than 170 scientific publications in refereed journals, 56 abstracts, three book chapters, served as editor for two books, and made over 250 scientific presentations. His honors include the Texas Veterinary Medical Association Faculty Achievement Award for Research; Texas A&M University System, Deputy Chancellor of Agriculture & Renewable Resources, Team Research Award for Research Excellence; Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award for Research, Texas A&M University System; USDA National Superior Service Award for Outstanding Research; American Veterinary Medical Association Research Award; Elected Full Member of Academia Veterinaria Mexicana; and Faculty Fellow, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.

He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, American College of Veterinary Pathologists, American Society of Microbiologists, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of Veterinary, Immunologists, International Academy of Pathology, Society of Tropical Veterinary Medicine, and the United States Animal Health Association. He has served on the editorial boards of Infection and Immunity, Veterinary Pathology, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Journal of Veterinary Research and Revista Técnia Pecuaria en México, as well as a scientific editor for FEMS Newsletters Microbiology, Tubercle and Lung Disease, WHO, The Texas Journal of Science, and Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology
