Dharani Ajithdoss, Ph.D. student in Dr. Lupiani's
laboratory, received a First Place Poster Prize and was Section Winner
in Microbiology during the 2008 Student Research Week. The poster
presented was entitled, "In
vitro transformation properties of the Meq protein of Marek's disease
virus."
Dayna Cox, undergraduate student in Dr. Lupiani's
laboratory, received a First Place Poster Prize and was Section Winner
in Microbiology during the 2008 Student Research Week. Her poster
was entitled, "Prevalence
of avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1) in wild waterfowl along the
Texas Gulf Coast."
Vinayak Brahmakshatriya, Ph.D. student in Dr. Reddy's
laboratory, received a Third Place Poster Prize in the Active Living/Public
Health section during the 2008 Student Research Week. His poster
was entitled, "Inactivation
of Avian Influenza Virus in Poultry Meat and Egg Products Using E-beam
Pasteurization." He also received a Third Place Oral Presentation
Prize and was Section Winner in Microbiology for his presentation
entitled, "Exploring the Role of Avian Influenza Viral NS1 Protein
as Interferon Antagonist."
Dr. Angela Wilcox, Clinical Pathology Resident, was selected to receive
the L.P. Jones Pathology Resident Award.
Veterinary Patholobiology Graduate Students, Pamela

Banerjee, Gina Lungu and Michelle
Boggs, each received a Fisher Institute
Medical Award.
Dr. Ralph Callicott, recent Veterinary Pathology Graduate, received the Outstanding
Graduate Student Award.
Dr. George Stoica, Professor, received the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence.
Nivedita Banerjee, Ph.D. student in Dr. Ramaiah
laboratory, received a second Place Poster Prize in the Medicine/Human Nutrition/Biomedical
Engineering section and session winner during the 2008 Student Research Week.
Banerjee also received a student Presentation Award First Place in Immunotoxicology
Specialty Section; SOCIETY OF TOXICOLOGY, Seattle March 2008 with a poster
entitled, “Possible
role of osteopontin in Th1 immune response and lymphocytic infiltration during
non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in a dietary murine model."

The Bush
Excellence Awards for Faculty were
presented for outstanding work in international teaching and international
research on Wednesday, February 27, during the Consuls General Luncheon
in the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center.

On May 22, Ross Clubb,
VTPB Office Assistant, helped carry the torch in the Law Enforcement
Torch Run (Flame of Hope) for Special Olympics. They ran from College
Station to Bryan. His dad (Dr. Fred Clubb, Clinical
Professor, VTPB and Special Olympics Coach), in a gasping, cyanotic
state brought up the rear. Ross is an Athlete with the College
Station/Bryan Aggie Bombers, Special Olympics Texas Team. He is
also on the Special Olympics National Soccer team that will be
competing this October at the 2007 Special
Olympics World Games in Shanghai, China.

American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.

awarded the 2007 Texas A&M International Excellence Award
for faculty.

Vinayak
Brahmakshatriya, graduate student in Dr. Sanjay
Reddy’s
laboratory,
attended the first DHS University Network Summit on Research and
Education, March 15-16, in Washington, D.C. His poster entitled, "Evaluation
in Chickens of a Live Attenuated NS1 Mutant Avian Influenza
Virus (AIV) Vaccine” won the first place in the DHS-sponsored
student
poster contest. By winning he Under Secretary's Award, Vinayak
has been invited to attend the DHS S&T Stakeholders onference
in May in
Washington D.C., and have lunch with Jay Cohen, the Under Secretary
for
Science and Technology for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Drs.
Patricia Holman, Research Assistant Professor, PI and Rebecca
Parr, Research Assistant Professor, Co-PI, were awarded
a grant from the National Research Fund for their proposal
entitled,
"Tick-Borne Diseases for Babesia microti: In vitro culture and
molecular interaction between parasite and host receptors at invasion."
On January 16, Martin N'Goma had his MSC defense
– Dr. Jeffrey Musser, Assistant Professor and Co-Chair of his
graduate committee. Mr. N’Goma successfully completed his MSc
- "The prevalence of and risk factors to Theileria parva
in smallholder dairy cattle in Lilongwe milkshed area."
Paulette Waters-Suchodolski, Graduate Student
in Dr. Sanjay Reddy’s Laboratory, competed in the 2007 Texas A&M
Agricultural Conference poster competition and received an honorable
mention!

On May 19, Dr. George Stoica,
Professor, Gina Lungu, and Thomas Xie,
graduate students in Dr. George Stocia’s laboratory, participated
in the Neuroscience Symposium sponsored by Department of Veterinary
Integrative Biosciences at The Veranda in Bryan, Texas. They received
second place for the Graduate Fellowship Grant with a poster presentation
entitled,
"Inherited systemic neuronal abiotrophy in Spraque Dawley rats."
Atrayee Banerjee, PhD student in Dr. Shashi Ramaiah's
lab, won the third prize Young Investigator Award in the 25th Annual
Society of Toxicologic Pathology meeting in Vancover, Canada.
